INTERVIEW: Courtney Coles

Courtney Coles is a photographer based in Los Angeles. In 2013, she obtained a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts Photography. Shooting primarily with film, Courtney captures a visual diary of herself, family, and friends. I spoke with Courtney to get an understanding of what it means to be a woman photographer, the emotional difficulties of capturing family on film, establishing trust from behind a lens, and her love of photographing rock concerts on film which lead to her recent photographical work with this year’s VANS Warped Tour.

Autumn DeWilde

Photographer and director, Autumn DeWilde, picked up the photo trait from her father, Jerry DeWilde, who photographed musical talents Jimi Hendrix, and other 1960’s icons. Today, Autumn DeWilde has photographed an impeccable range in the faces of music. From musicians like Beck, Elliott Smith, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, to recent sounds waves like Alabama Shakes and Yuna. DeWilde has become an incredible force in the editorial industry since her work with Rodarte and Cadillac, who gave her full creative control for their Escalade campaign. Honestly, how many women can say that?! DeWilde has been a long time inspiration to me, so it only felt natural that I feature a woman who is so well rounded, and grounded when it comes to her work and family life. You can see what Autumn DeWilde is up to if you follow her (and her awesome daughter, Arrow) on Instagram!

Everywhere And Nowhere Inbetween

I attended SPACE Gallery’s first photo show of the year, and it was fantastic! Everywhere And Nowhere InBetween features the unique moments and memories captured on tour by rock superstars Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and LA’s very own Malia James of Dum Dum Girls.

DJ Robert Ackroyd (Florence and the Machine), played an incredible Blood Orange tune, while DJ Jules (Dum Dum Girls) played the iconic song of Moonrise Kingdom, making it a great night for photography, and sway-ish dancing.

The exhibition holds 100 photographs – fifty selected by each artist – of behind the scenes moments, and portraits that are sweet, but still packs punch. Malia James took the night by storm as crowds of friends and gallery goers had the opportunity to speak with the multi-talented James, while she posed for numerous pictures Saturday night in Downtown Pomona’s Art District.

You can see the selection of photographs now until February 1, 2014. I encourage you all to do so, it was such a treat to see my girl, Karen O (not in person, I would have died) looking so soft and sweet on the white gallery walls of SPACE. Unfortunately those photographs with respective band mates are not for sale, however there are many out of the hundred that are available for purchase.
